Where the Fire Started

"Some fires you start. Some fires start you. Either way, the house remembers."
, Nat Berhe

A monumental 120 by 72 inch canvas that reads like a fever dream of collective memory. On the left, a crowd of ghostly white faces emerges from absolute darkness, their hollow eyes and open mouths frozen in silent witness. At center, a red house burns beneath a sky of blue and crimson, flanked by a demonic winged figure that spreads its arms like a dark angel of reckoning. On the far right, a massive face presses in from the edge, eyes bloodshot, watching everything. The paint is thick, raw, and layered, the surface alive with the texture of something that has been building for a long time. This is Berhe at his most narrative and most unsettling, a painting about origin, about what we watched burn and who was watching with us.
