A masked figure emerges from a bruised gold ground, the head of a fox or wolf crowned above a black bandit strip where the eyes should be, only two yellow glints breaking through. Below a raw blue horizon, the body arrives in full formal dress, black uniform with sharp lapels, epaulets, a silver medal cascade running down the sash. The painting stages the collision between the wild and the ceremonial, between the animal we hide and the honor we perform. It is what happens when power has to wear a face.
