"Royalty doesn't always announce itself. Sometimes it just watches, quietly, from a place you can't reach."
- Nat Berhe
Structured as a diptych, this tall canvas presents two worlds stacked: an upper realm of impenetrable darkness threaded with electric yellow-green and white, an abstract cityscape or nocturnal architecture, and below, a pale, ghostly figure emerging from black depths, face wide-eyed, robes dissolving into light and pigment. The painting draws on Old Master portraiture and abstract expressionism in equal measure, a sovereign seen and unseen.
